Two women were killed and five others injured in a shooting at a barbecue held in an upstate New York park, according to local police.
The incident occurred at Rochester’s Maplewood Park on Sunday evening, shortly after 6 p.m., while hundreds of people, including children, were present. Multiple weapons were reportedly used in the shooting.
The five injured individuals are expected to recover from their non-life-threatening injuries, police reported on Monday.
Tyasia Manning, 25, and Phylicia Council, 34, were the victims of the shooting, according to police.
Manning, who worked for the city and dedicated her efforts to helping young people reach their full potential, was remembered by Rochester Mayor Malik Evans. “These were innocent victims,” Evans stated.
Describing the aftermath, Evans reflected on the disturbing scene: “As I looked at that crime scene last night, I saw a stroller, people’s shoes. Our residents should be able to enjoy a summer day at the park without fear. Unfortunately, we have individuals in our community who are nothing but cowards, willing to target women. Two of those women lost their lives.”
“Maplewood Park is renowned for its beautiful views and events,” Evans said. “It should not be remembered as a place tainted by violence.”
As of now, no arrests have been made.
