5 Killed, Dozens Injured in Attack on Russia’s Belgorod Region
Fatal Airstrikes in Belgorod
On Friday evening, Russia’s Belgorod region was struck by a series of airstrikes, resulting in the deaths of five people and injuries to 37 others. The local authorities reported the attack, which marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.
Ukrainian Forces Accused of Using Cluster Munitions
Belgorod region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov accused Ukrainian forces of launching the attack using “Vampir” multiple-launch rocket systems equipped with cluster munitions. These munitions targeted the city of Belgorod and its surrounding areas, causing widespread devastation.
Casualties and Injuries
The attack claimed the lives of one woman and four men, with Governor Gladkov confirming that at least six children were among the injured. The severity of the incident is highlighted by the fact that ten people are currently hospitalized in critical condition, receiving urgent medical attention.
Extensive Property Damage
Beyond the tragic loss of life, the airstrikes also caused significant property damage in Belgorod. Residential buildings and businesses suffered from shattered windows and damaged facades. A video shared on Telegram showed Governor Gladkov surveying the damage as emergency responders worked to extinguish fires on a building’s roof.
Fires in Dubovoe Village
In the nearby village of Dubovoe, just south of Belgorod, the attack ignited two homes, a car, and a garage. Fortunately, the fires have since been extinguished, but the damage adds to the growing toll of the conflict on civilian infrastructure.
Air Raid Alert and Ongoing Tensions
The confirmation of casualties came two hours after regional authorities issued an air raid alert for Belgorod and nearby communities, urging residents to seek immediate shelter. The attack is part of a broader escalation in border clashes between Russian and Ukrainian forces, with the conflict also affecting the neighboring Kursk region, where tens of thousands have been displaced due to ongoing fighting.
Lack of Official Response
As of now, there has been no official comment from Russia’s Defense Ministry or Ukrainian authorities regarding the airstrikes. The incident underscores the increasing volatility of the conflict as tensions between the two nations continue to rise.
