Russia launches massive missile and drone attack on Ukraine

Massive Russian Missile and Drone Assault Strikes Ukraine: Casualties and Infrastructure Damage Reported

On the morning of August 26th, Russian forces unleashed a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine, resulting in widespread damage and tragic loss of life. The assault left at least three people dead, injured several others, and caused significant disruptions to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

Ukraine’s Energy Sector Targeted

Russia’s ongoing attacks continue to focus on Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure. Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, made it clear that these attacks would have severe consequences for Russia. He warned that the cost of trying to destroy Ukraine’s energy sector would be paid with the destruction of Russian infrastructure.

Nationwide Emergency Blackouts Implemented

In the wake of the attacks, DTEK, a major energy company, announced that they had received orders from Ukrenergo to initiate emergency blackouts across the country. These outages are unplanned and unpredictable, as power engineers work tirelessly to restore electricity to affected homes. The Cherkasy and Mykolaiv regions were among the first to enforce these emergency shutdowns following directives from Ukrenergo.

Explosions Rock Kyiv and Other Ukrainian Cities

The capital city of Kyiv experienced multiple explosions, with reports of blasts in various districts. Members of the Kyiv Post team confirmed hearing explosions during the attack. The assault extended beyond Kyiv, with explosions reported in Kharkiv, Kryvyi Rih, Kropyvnytskyi, Dnipro, Khmelnytskyi, and Vinnytsia.

Russian Missiles Launched from Multiple Locations

The Russian military’s assault involved missile launches from the Caspian Sea, with aircraft departing from several airfields, including Engels, Diaghilev, Olenya, and Shaikovka. Additional missiles were launched from Black Sea carriers, and a large-scale drone raid was reported in regions such as Rivne, Zhytomyr, Kyiv, Poltava, Chernihiv, and Sumy. Sergiy Lysak, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, described the attack as an “en masse” assault by Russian forces.

Kyiv Hit During Rush Hour

In Kyiv, the attack occurred during the morning rush hour, with explosions rattling the city. Ukraine’s military warned of an extensive missile and drone attack, following waves of earlier drone strikes. The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia had 11 TU-95 strategic bombers in the air and confirmed the launch of multiple missiles. Outside of Kyiv, Reuters reporters heard air defense systems engaging incoming threats.

Destruction in Lutsk and Response from Polish Forces

The northwestern city of Lutsk also suffered from the attack, with an apartment block being damaged. Local authorities were working to verify possible casualties. In response to the widespread assault, Polish and allied aircraft were activated as the attack reached regions in Ukraine’s west and near the Polish border.

Anticipated Attack and Ukraine’s Retaliation

The large-scale assault was not entirely unexpected, as Ukrainians had been bracing for a significant missile strike. Last week, the U.S. embassy issued a warning about an elevated risk of attack around Ukrainian Independence Day, which was observed on Saturday.

In retaliation, Ukraine has stepped up its long-range drone attacks on Russia. Andriy Yermak reiterated that Russia’s efforts to destroy Ukraine’s energy infrastructure would lead to significant repercussions for Russia. He vowed that Ukraine would respond.

Ongoing Attacks and Casualty Report

Earlier on Monday, Ukraine’s military reported that Russia had launched two waves of drone attacks. Fortunately, initial reports indicated no damage or casualties from those strikes, as up to 10 drones were destroyed on their approach to Kyiv. Despite this, one fatality was confirmed—a 69-year-old man lost his life during the attack, underscoring the devastating human toll of this ongoing conflict.
